What is the use of Hackers, Do we need them?

First, Who is a Hacker?

Generally, a Hacker is someone who tries to get access to an individual or an organization’s personal information without their consent.

The word “Hacker” is rather ambiguous. Or, it could refer to any number of different types of people who are extremely knowledgeable about technology, and the term “Hacker” doesn’t necessarily mean someone who is trying to steal intellectual property or break into a restricted network.

Calling someone a Hacker is the layman’s approach to describing a digital thief, but Security Professionals will often draw the line between the White Hats and the Black Hats. — Joel Tope

Types of Hackers :

Perhaps there are other types of Hackers I am yet to know of or read about but I know three types of Hackers; the Black Hat Hackers, White Hat Hackers, and Red Hat Hackers. I will focus on just two — Black and White Hat Hackers.

Black Hat Hackers

These are the bad guys that we see in movies breaking into a system’s database, sending viruses, malware, and so on to exploit the weaknesses of a system and possibly decrypt it to get money. “Black Hat Hackers” is what people think of when they hear of “Hackers”. The Black Hat Hackers have the skills and expertise of Pen Testers, Software Engineers they are learned and updated and some of them were once White Hat Hackers.

White Hat Hackers

Since the Black Hat Hackers are the bad guys then the White Hat Hackers are the good guys. These are the real guys. They are Penetration Testing Engineers who have the expertise and knowledge of computers and computing — I call them Charles Babbage and Alan Turing’s children because they have first-hand knowledge of how computers work and spend hours discovering vulnerabilities and checkmating them. They are paid large amounts to find security faults in computers and correct them. They are also known as Ethical Hackers.

Good and Bad News:

The bad news is that the commonest Hackers are Black Hat Hackers and the good news is that more White Hat Hackers are coming up to help fight the Black Hackers.

Now, Do we need Hackers?

Yes, we do.

We need White Hat Hackers who can checkmate the activities of Black Hat Hackers as well as test the vulnerability of a system and fix it against intruders. However, The White Hat Hackers must be paid well and protected. Remember that the reason why Black Hat Hackers hack Computers is for money and some of them were once White Hat Hackers so what happened?
