My Open Source story is a very short story of how I started contributing to open source projects (projects that anyone is free to use, study, modify and distribute for any purpose).

So, I wanted to start contributing to projects in public repositories but I didn’t know how to and moreover I felt like I was not so skilled for that(Every beginner’s problem in Open Source I guess) even after attending a webinar organized by WOSCA (Women of Open Source Community Africa), Shaking my head right now. I read articles quite alright but starting was something else.

One day, I read an article that changed my perspective. It broke down everything and suggested a repository to add your name and that’s what makes your contribution. Interesting right? You can follow the link to the repository and make your first contribution too. Don’t worry it is a step by step approach. Don’t sleep on this!

Here is what motivated me start:

  • The willingness to try something new(my biggest motivation).
  • Beginner friendly projects available on Github.
  • Following beginner contributors who were making progress.
  • The willingness to learn how to collaborate on Github more effectively.
  • Open Source helps put you out there.
  • I wanted to participate in hacktoberfest, finally!

The challenges I faced:

  • Contributing can be so time consuming. This is because some projects take longer period than others.
  • Not all my Pull Requests were merged, some were closed. But we move!
  • Some projects were tougher.

"If you seek to help, join the open source community and fight to keep the spirit of the press alive and the internet free. I have been to the darkest corners of government, and what they fear is light." ~ Edward Snowden

Contribute to Open Source projects today, one pull request at a time.

Thank you for reading!
